The state's largest youth event will also have more than 22,000 animals (sheep, goats, pigs and cattle) in the barns at the State Fair Park, coming from all 77 counties. Families will move in this week, with competitions starting Wednesday and activities lasting until March 20, when the animals are sold.
“When the KQHA initiated this show, there was not a quality facility in the state of Kansas that could support something that was their vision. If you’re going to launch something and run a quality show, they realized that Kansas could not support that vision.”
The Chesapeake Energy Arena is one of several venues that are big drivers in the city’s tourism industry. Other important venues are the Jim Norick Arena at the OKC Fairgrounds and USA Softball Championship Stadium.
Horse shows bring in an average of 836,000 people annually, with those visitors spending in excess of $180 million on hotel rooms, restaurants, and in local stores.
The American Quarter Horse Association World Show is at the OKC Fairgrounds until Nov. 23. The show's vendors are enjoying all the space in the MAPS 3-backed Bennett Event Center.
On one side of the city, horses are racing every weekend. On the other side, at State Fair Park, several horse shows are coming to town, bringing a huge economic impact with them.
