Boathouse District’s Bar K set to open

By Erick Perry / Development / February 2, 2023

Oklahoma City’s Boathouse District will officially welcome its first private development on Feb. 8 with the addition of Bar K. A grand opening celebration will be held, beginning at 9 a.m., with a special Bar K members-only preview held Feb. 4-5.

An “Early Dog” membership deal is currently being offered for those who sign up prior to the grand opening on Feb. 8.

The two-and-a-half-acre, dog-focused facility is much more than meets the eye, incorporating modern bars, a dog-friendly event space and a dog-free restaurant, in addition to the indoor and outdoor recreational areas for dogs. The included restaurant and bars offer seasonal menus of ethically sourced organic foods that cater to humans and dogs alike.

The dog-specific menu allows four-legged guests to experience high-quality dishes like chicken risotto, beef stew, and turkey and sweet potato meatballs for as low as five dollars. Desserts and even dog wines and beers are available for the four-legged family members as well. Humans can take advantage of various bars, a brunch-specific menu with dishes like stuffed French toast and huevos rancheros tacos, and an expanded lunch and dinner menu with items like fresh smoothies, southwestern salad, mushroom Swiss burgers and more.

“Dogs are true members of each family, which is why we created an environment where everyone is welcome, furry friends included,” Bar K Co-Founder and Partner Dave Hensley said. “We saw Oklahoma City as the perfect place to continue growing the vision.”

The Boathouse District location is the third installment of the Bar K chain, following successful developments in St. Louis and Kansas City.

“We’re thrilled that the success of Bar K has brought us to Oklahoma City, a thriving, growing and future-focused community,” Bar K Co-Founder and Partner Leib Dodell said.

The facility features several works by local artists and craftsmen, like Lindsay Zodrow, Amanda Weathers and Tony Westlund. Revitalized rowing oars, paddle boards and a slab of polished cypress with a live edge decorate interior spaces, connecting the facility with neighbors such as Riversport OKC.

“The vintage rowing oars hanging above the restaurant bar date back to one of the first-ever international rowing competitions held in the Boathouse District,” Dodell said. “The sliding barn door to the private event space is fashioned out of authentic Riversport paddleboards.”

In addition to the revitalized woodworks, the park incorporates recycled turf outdoors for an easy clean environment.

Bar K was developed and constructed by Chamber members Rose Rock Development Partners, Pivot Project and Miller-Tippens Construction.

Following the grand opening on Feb. 8, Bar K will operate every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with extended hours of operation on Fridays and Saturdays when the facility will close at 9 p.m.

Guests without dogs can enter free of charge and enjoy the various bars and restaurants available. Membership for dogs can be purchased on an annual or monthly basis. Daily guest passes are also available.
