MAPS 4 survey encourages citizens to help improve their communities

By Erick Perry / Development / December 5, 2022

Help make a difference in your community by taking the new Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) 4 survey.

The City of Oklahoma City released the survey as a way for citizens to voice their ideas on improvements to 105 community and neighborhood parks across Oklahoma City as part of the MAPS initiative. The survey is available in English and Spanish and will remain open to the public until May 2023.

In addition to the online survey, a series of public open house events will be held to gather further input from citizens. Eight open houses will be held to address eight separate zones, outlined by the city. The first group of meetings will be held in December, with additional meetings following in January and February. Residents who use the parks are encouraged to show up and voice their opinion on future improvements.

$69.6 million has been budgeted through MAPS 4 to improve conditions like accessibility and amenities at parks around the city.

“As we set out to improve parks around the city, the first step is to gather feedback from the community for this project to have an understanding of what the needs are,” MAPS 4 Program Manager, David Todd said in a release by the city.

Neighborhood parks could see improvements to their walking trails, outdoor fitness facilities or practice fields. However, city leaders and consultants are looking to citizens’ input to determine the exact needs of each park.

Community parks could see additional trees, bathrooms, playground equipment, splash pads, gardens and more.

“Our goal is to transform the city’s parks system, especially in the areas that need it most. We believe that parks are critical to making our city great and our goal is to improve our neighborhood and community parks in the most equitable way possible,” Todd said.

The park improvements will be seen across the city in areas like Lake Stanley Draper and Booker T. Washington Park, while new parks will be constructed in areas such as the far northeast and southeast regions of the city.
