OKC City Council approves next phase of MAPS 4 Bike Lane projects
The Oklahoma City Council approved a construction contract for the next package of MAPS 4 bike lane projects, part of the $22 million initiative dedicated to expanding and improving bike facilities across the city.
"These new bike lanes will create stronger networks of connections for cyclists, providing them with more convenient and safer ways to travel around the city," MAPS Program Manager David Todd said. "Thanks to MAPS 4, this is a significant step towards enhancing mobility and advancing connectivity across the city."
Bike lane locations are guided by the city’s bikewalkokc plan, which identifies priority routes and key connections. This package includes $2.3 million to construct 7.2 miles of new bike lanes, primarily providing east-to-west crosstown access.
The primary project will start at the Lake Overholser Trail and continue east along NW 16th Street, north on N. Tulsa Avenue to NW 19th Street and end at NW 18th Street and Indiana Avenue near the Plaza District.
The city categorizes bike facilities into three tiers, with tier 1 offering the highest level of protection for cyclists. Construction will feature a mix of bike facility types, including tier 1 protected bike lanes and multi-use trails, tier 2 standard bike lanes, as well as tier 3 shared routes and road shoulders.
RCC Traffic was selected as the construction contract for the project stretching from NW 16th to 19th Street, which is scheduled to begin later this spring.
Additional MAPS 4 bike lane construction is already underway, including improvements along the Classen Corridor between 63rd Street and Grand Boulevard, as well as along 16th Street between Walnut Avenue and N. Bryant Avenue.
