Omni Convention Center Hotel development making advances

Now that a section of the Oklahoma City Boulevard between Shields Boulevard and S. Robinson Avenue has opened, you will be able to see the major advances taking place at the Omni Hotel development just south of the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Omni’s purchase of the hotel site at the southeast corner of the Oklahoma City Boulevard and Robinson from the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority closed a couple of weeks ago, followed by construction trailers being delivered last week. This week, construction fencing will be installed around the perimeter of the site. The official groundbreaking ceremony is at 10 a.m. Oct. 1 on the site.

Soon, you may also notice the model rooms and sales office being constructed in the former auto dealership building between S. Walker and S. Hudson avenues on the south side of W. Reno Avenue. The model rooms will be exact, full-size replicas of what the beautiful rooms in our Omni will look like. The sales office will book group sales and events at the Omni Hotel, bringing visitors and sales tax dollars to our city.

The 605-room, AAA Four Diamond hotel will have three restaurants including a sports bar with excellent patio spaces, a signature Bob’s Steak and Chop House, a coffee shop with light food offerings, a burger bar for casual patio dining across from Scissortail Park, a rooftop pool and bar overlooking the park, and a full-service spa. The hotel will be built, owned and operated by Omni hotels and is expected to have an economic impact of more than $137 million per year.

The Omni is one element of a remarkable amount of development currently under construction in the Core to Shore area. The new convention center is under construction directly south of the Omni, Scissortail Park is under construction directly west, a Fairfield Inn is under construction southeast of the Omni and design is underway for a major mixed-use development and structured parking garage, which will be directly east of the Omni.

These projects will be completed over the next couple of years and by the end of 2020, you will not recognize the area. The transformation will be stunning and the economic impact will be tremendous. I am very excited about what the future holds with the addition of the Omni Hotel and surrounding developments.
