RIVERSPORT OKC breaks ground on $1.4M bike park expansion

One of Oklahoma City’s premiere outdoor experiences broke ground July 1 on a $1.4 million expansion to its bike park.
RIVERSPORT OKC expects the Oklahoma Trailhead and Bike Park to serve as a hub for the city’s trail system. The expansion allows that system to run through OKC’s Boathouse District and will connect to the Katy Trail east of RIVERSPORT.
A new bike plaza, community garden and outdoor classroom will be big parts of the expansion. Shipping containers will be used to create the welcome center, a coffee shop and ADA-compliant restrooms.
Also included is a unique feature which will allow visitors to cycle on an elevated trail that will span the rooftops of the shipping containers. Cyclists also will have the option of tackling an 80-mile loop around OKC, all on paved trails with access to mountain bike lanes and jump lines.
Mike Knopp, RIVERSPORT executive director, said the expansion will allow them to provide amenities for trail users.
“Creating accessible outdoor experiences for all is core to our mission at RIVERSPORT,” Knopp said.
The expansion has a planned opening in spring 2024 and is funded by a grant from the Oklahoma Recreational Trails Program, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and several anonymous donors.
