Stand Tall, Shop Small for OKC: Adventure District spotlight

If you’ve lived in Oklahoma City for any length of time, you know the area at the crossroads of I-35 and I-44 is the destination for all things fun. From science to animals, cowboys to softball, the area coined the Adventure District is home to some of Oklahoma City’s most popular attractions. But attractions aren’t all the area has to offer.

 “When most people think of the Adventure District they think of our amazing attractions, but we want them to know there’s more. We have so many dining and shopping options as well,” said Tiffany Batdorf, director of Oklahoma City’s Adventure District.

Bricktown Brewery at Remington Park

Located just off the casino floor, the Bricktown Brewery provides a full view of the track and live horse racing. While watching the races, grab a burger or pizza and a handcrafted beer. (Must be 18 years and older with a valid ID to enter.)

Henry Hudson’s at Remington Park

Open during live racing season, Henry Hudson’s features pub-style fare like wings, burgers and smothered tater tots. The covered patio is the perfect spot to grab lunch or dinner and enjoy the upcoming Thoroughbred season beginning August 20.

Gabriella’s Italian Grill & Pizzeria

Originally built in 1938 as the Kentucky Club, Gabriella’s location has a long and colorful history. Back in the day it was the perfect place for a gambling den, dance hall, and speakeasy. Today it’s home to traditional Italian cuisine and pizza dough made fresh daily. The wood burning oven—the first of its kind in Oklahoma—is fired exclusively with seasoned oak.

Fergie’s Place at Lincoln Park Golf Course

You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the homestyle menu at Fergie’s Place at Lincoln Park Golf Course. Favorites include sandwiches, the catfish basket and the meatball sub. Fergie’s is also a favorite spot for out-of-town softball teams playing in and around OKC.

Quick dining options are also available in the Adventure District including McDonald’s, Subway and Oklahoma’s own Sonic.

Shopping in the Adventure District

If shopping is high on your list of activities, the gift shops within the attractions don’t disappoint. “Each attraction has their own shopping experience with so many unique items that you may not see anywhere else. Plus, they are easily accessible without admission,” added Batdorf.

Need a gift for the bird lover in your life? Swing by the American Pigeon Museum and Library’s gift shop. Hats, shirts and specially designed ceramic mugs are just a few of the items that promote man’s oldest feathered friend.

Laney Casey, manager of The Museum Store at The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum says one of her goals when she started was to become a destination store. “We have so many regulars who shop with us and the majority are from out of town,” she said. “We have 4,000 square feet so we have to fill it with unique items, including he largest selection of Native American jewelry.” Additional favorite and unexpected items include Cigar Indian statues, Pendleton wool items, home décor and art.

The best in educational games and books can be found at the Oklahoma City Zoo’s Safari Gift Shop and The Science Shop at Science Museum Oklahoma. From take home science experiments to books to an assortment of t-shirts, the animal and science lover will discover new and fun items.

Collectors of fire service items will love the selection at the Oklahoma Firefighters Museum gift shop. Collector pins, unique posters and prints, hats and more help support the Oklahoma fire service.

It’s no secret women’s softball has amassed a huge following. USA Softball’s gift shop has everything and then some for the softball fan, including shirts, visors, and hoodies.

Shopping and dining within the Adventure District is an investment Oklahoma City: for every dollar spent, 67 cents stays in the community. “The Oklahoma City Chamber’s Stand Stall, Shop Small campaign is supporting and promoting local businesses that make our city unique, while offering a needed boost after the pandemic” added Batdorf.
