The power of dogs: Bar K celebrates bond between dogs and their owners

It’s been said some of the best ideas come from the desire to solve a problem.

“The creation of Bar K came from a very organic place: where you can bring your dog and have it truly treated like a family member. We couldn’t find it, so we decided to create it,” said David Hensley, founding partner, Bar K.

That place is Bar K, set to open in the Boathouse District in Oklahoma City in early 2022.  Founded by Hensley and Leib Dodell, Bar K’s first location opened in Kansas City in 2018.

“We are thrilled to be coming into the Oklahoma City market. It’s full of dog owners and animal lovers. The Boathouse District is world-class and it’s the perfect location for our third Bar K location,” added Hensley.

The increase in dog ownership and desire to incorporate pets into daily activities has inspired many businesses to open their doors to four-legged family members. While restaurants may welcome dogs, it mostly consists of being on a leash with a water bowl. And dog parks are fun for the dogs, but there’s not much for their human companions to do. Bar K offers the best of both worlds: dogs can run and play while owners enjoy great food and drinks and gather with others who share a love of dogs.

The Kansas City location includes a large outdoor dog park with a dog splash pool and climbing wall, a restaurant/bar, training/grooming facility and an adoption center. Hensley said all of that and more will be included in the Oklahoma City location, along with a 10,000-square-foot indoor dog park.

“We are thrilled to be coming into the Oklahoma City market. It’s full of dog owners and animal lovers. The Boathouse District is world-class and it’s the perfect location for our third Bar K location."

Dog owners can trust that while they’re having fun, their dogs are in good hands. Dogtenders, who’ve received extensive training in dog behavior, keep the dogs safe while owners enjoy their time in the restaurant. Dogtenders also keep the park clean. “When owners see their dogs having fun, they can relax and have fun as well,” added Hensley.

There are two ways to experience Bar K—as a member or a guest. For an annual fee members have unlimited access during business hours. Guests can purchase a day pass. Don’t have a dog? You’re welcome too and there’s no charge.

Hensley said the core of Bar K is the desire to bring people together through the shared love of dogs and right now, that connection is more important than ever. “We want to celebrate the special bond between humans and their dogs and provide a destination that is equally fun for both.”
