Energy FC’s expanded ownership and MAPS 4 stadium set to boost OKC’s community and economic growth

OKC Energy FC is set for an exciting new chapter with an expanded ownership group, now led by Echo holding the majority stake. This significant development aligns with plans for a new stadium, a key project under the MAPS 4 initiative. Energy FC has always prioritized community impact, and the multipurpose outdoor stadium is expected to have a transformative effect on Oklahoma City, providing a versatile venue for events such as festivals, concerts, and, of course, soccer. This contributes to positioning Oklahoma City as a significant destination.

The Oklahoma City Council recently approved an increase in the budget for the MAPS 4 multipurpose stadium from $41 million to $71 million to address rising construction costs. Designed to accommodate approximately 8,000 spectators, the stadium will feature a regulation-sized playing surface suitable for high school, collegiate, and professional sports, as well as concerts and other events.

"By having the vision to establish the Energy FC franchise, Bob Funk Jr. and Tim McLaughlin created a turnkey opportunity for professional soccer to thrive in OKC,” said Christian Kanady, founding partner and CEO of Echo. “With the sport’s popularity exploding in this country, we are excited to own another high-quality asset in Echo’s portfolio while positioning OKC as a player in the next chapter of this internationally loved sport.”

The ownership expansion underscores the efforts of founders Funk and McLaughlin to ensure a well-capitalized, engaged, and locally committed management team. Their continued involvement highlights their dedication to the club, paving the way for the next era of professional soccer in Oklahoma City.

Echo, founded by Kanady in 2010 and headquartered in the iconic Ziggurat building overlooking Kerr Park in downtown Oklahoma City, is a multi-strategy investment firm dedicated to revitalizing American industries. The firm strategically invests across energy, life sciences, national security, and media & entertainment.

"I am incredibly grateful for the support and commitment from Oklahoma City and Energy FC fans throughout the years as we focus on gaining momentum toward the club's return to competition," said Funk. "With this investment from Echo and with Christian’s vision, we have positioned the club for long-term success and further embedded the team into the fabric of Oklahoma City."

The new stadium will not only serve as a home for Energy FC but also provide a versatile venue for events that can help foster growth in Oklahoma City. It will offer a space to host championships and inspire student athletes. As Oklahoma City's diversity continues to grow, the stadium will also serve as a platform for showcasing positive role models and enhancing community engagement.

Furthermore, the stadium is expected to drive economic impact in the city, aligning with discussions at the July Chamber Forum about the strategic plan to make Oklahoma City a place where people can enjoy a variety of activities. The addition of this entertainment venue will contribute to creating a vibrant atmosphere, encouraging visitors to stay longer and explore more of what the city has to offer, including dining, shopping and other recreational activities.

The stadium's design includes a United States Soccer Federation-approved pitch, locker rooms, and suites. It is envisioned as a catalyst for a sports-centered entertainment district, mirroring successful models in Louisville, Kentucky, and Indianapolis, with a similar project underway in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. City officials anticipate that design work for the new stadium will commence this year, with construction expected to begin in 2026.
