Forbes features Oklahoma City as travel destination

By Erick Perry / Economy / December 22, 2022

Oklahoma City is attracting visitors from across the world, thanks to some of the city’s newest developments like the First National Center and First Americans Museum, nationally known sports teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and tourism-focused entities like the Oklahoma City Conventions and Visitors Bureau (Visit OKC).

Wendy Altschuler, contributing travel writer for Forbes magazine, recently detailed a 48-hour stay in Oklahoma City in an online article, listing some of her top things to do, see and eat in the area. She broke down her activities by morning, day and evening, beginning at what she calls “an Instagram-worthy hot spot” in The Gilded Acorn. The writer spent a fair amount of time exploring the First National Center, which houses The Gilded Acorn, also mentioning the building’s public lobby bar, Stock & Bond and Tellers restaurants and Library of Distilled Spirits speakeasy.

Altschuler listed places like Scissortail Park, Bricktown and Stockyards City as some of her top experiences. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum was also featured, as she noted the museum’s many halls of fame, along with the curated art that speaks to the history of the American West.

“These writers help us showcase OKC’s unique flavors, people and experiences which inspires others to come and see OKC first-hand,” Visit OKC Senior VP of Destination Marketing Lindsay Vidrine said. “Not only does this national coverage drive visitors, but it has additional benefits such as improving perceptions of our city and state.”

Visit OKC was a driving force in attracting 21.4 million leisure and business travelers to the city and state in 2021. The destination marketing organization has had a hand in bringing national conventions like the TEAMS Conference & Expo, National Brownfields Training Conference and more to the city. The organization consistently briefs media outlets on what is happening in Oklahoma City, pitches potential stories to specific writers and hosts customized site visits for content creators to experience local attractions.

“We’re fortunate to also have strong tourism partners here in OKC that bring media opportunities to us, and we connect writers with things to do through tailored itineraries,” Vidrine said.
