New Power Generation Units Near Tinker Strengthen Energy Reliability in Oklahoma City Region

By Chamber Staff / Economy / February 20, 2026

Nearly 100 megawatts of new, fast-responding power generation capacity have been added near Tinker Air Force Base, strengthening grid reliability for the Oklahoma City region while supporting mission readiness at one of the metro’s largest economic drivers.

Oklahoma Gas & Electric (OG&E), Tinker Air Force Base leadership and elected officials recently marked the completion of two new natural gas-fired combustion turbine units located near the installation. Together, the units provide a combined 96 megawatts of generation capacity, enough electricity to power approximately 34,000 homes.

The project replaces two 55-year-old generation units and is strategically positioned near OG&E’s largest concentration of energy demand in the Oklahoma City metro area. By locating generation closer to customers, the new units help reduce transmission congestion and improve overall grid performance during periods of high demand.

In addition to strengthening reliability for residential and commercial customers, the turbines are equipped with islanding capabilities that allow Tinker to maintain power during broader grid disruptions, enabling continued operations during emergencies or national security events.

Designed for operational flexibility, the units can be brought online quickly to meet peak demand, respond to real-time system needs and support the regional grid when demand rises.
