Oklahoma City ranks second nationally among the top 50 cities for maximizing apartment space on a $1,700 budget, according to Rent Cafe, a nationwide apartment listing service. The analysis focused on the delicate balance between space and affordability. On average, the budget across 50 U.S. cities would compare to a 944-square-foot apartment, with variations across regions.

Nearly 1,700 ZIP codes across 50 largest cities were looked at with the calculated monthly budget of $1,700 by using average square-footage and average rent for each ZIP code.

Cities in the Southern and Midwest regions, specifically Memphis and Oklahoma City, take the lead in ZIP codes with the most space for the national average rent.

Oklahoma City stands out by offering residents an impressive 1,993 square feet within the budget. While Memphis's ZIP code 38109 leads with 1,996 square feet, showcasing a gradient from urban to rural living, city centers often sacrifice space for convenience.

The achievement of OKC spotlights the Midwest, appearing 12 times in the list of ZIP codes with the most space for the national average rent, highlighting regional diversity. Oklahoma City’s lowest ranking being 44th on the list still offers renters a spacious 1,632-square-foot apartment.

In contrast, of the cities with ZIP codes with the least space for the national average rent, New York City appears on this list 36 times. A Manhattan apartment with a $1,700 budget can get you a 211-square-foot apartment.

Turning our attention to our neighbor Texas, San Antonio and Houston exhibit a unique dynamic. At the core of these urban centers and their respective ZIP codes, the available space ranges from 700 to 1000 square feet. Conversely, as one moves outward from the city center, renters discover more expansive options, ranging from 1200 to 1500 square feet on the outskirts.

The nationwide analysis showcases a diverse landscape of living spaces within a $1,700 budget in efforts to assist renters who are navigating the market. While cities like Oklahoma City stand out for their blend of ample space and affordability, others present more confined options. The exploration reveals the intricate balance between urban convenience and spacious living, with each city offering a unique perspective on the interplay of budget and square footage.
