Oklahoma City named a hotspot for job growth

Oklahoma City is making waves as one of the fastest growing cities for job opportunities. According to data provided by Gusto, a leading cloud-based HR platform, Oklahoma City experienced a notable surge in job growth, cementing its position as an attractive hub for employment seekers. 

After a decline in job additions since August of the previous year, companies rebounded nationally in January. Hiring among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) increased by a whole percentage point, jumping from 4% to 5.1% compared to the previous month. This resurgence in hiring activity is a positive indicator of economic strength. 

Oklahoma City ranked third on Gusto’s list of fastest growing cities for job growth with an increase of 0.7% in January. Only Louisville, KY (1.7%) and Las Vegas (1%) ranked higher on the list. 

Nationally, several industries experienced notable job growth including arts and entertainment, tourism, automotive, communications, accounting and facilities.  

Despite a slight overall decline in net employment for SMBs, largely attributed to an increase in quits, there are promising signs of confidence in the job market. The rise in quits, often indicative of workers feeling empowered to seek better opportunities, suggests a growing sense of optimism among job seekers. Gusto's New Hires Pay Index reflects this sentiment, showing a 1.2% increase in pay among newly hired workers compared to the same period last year. 

Gusto's data provides valuable insights into the employment landscape, drawing from real-time payroll data from over 300,000 small and medium-sized businesses across various industries nationwide.
