Oklahoma ranked No. 5 for economic outlook

By Chamber Staff / Economy / January 15, 2024

If there was a playoff for the best economic outlook among the 50 U.S. states, Oklahoma would clearly be in the running to bring home a national championship.

According to the latest Economic Outlook Ranking, Oklahoma is ranked No. 5 for economic outlook compared to other state across the nation. Even compared to those states bordering Oklahoma, the Sooner State is ahead of the competition. The closest bordering state to Oklahoma in the rankings is Texas, which is slotted at No. 13, followed by Colorado (No. 25), Kansas (No. 30), Missouri (No. 31) and New Mexico (No. 38).

Oklahoma also ranks favorably in several select categories nationally when ranked against bordering states, most notably for Property Tax Burden (No. 4) and Top Marginal Corporate Income Tax (No. 7).

The Economic Outlook Ranking, which is analyzed by the American Exchange Council (Rich State, Poor State), is a forecast based on a state's current standing in 15 state policy variables. Each of these factors is influenced directly by state lawmakers through the legislative process.
