Visit OKC recently released critical reports that highlight the substantial impact of tourism on Oklahoma City’s economy. A research study conducted by Tourism Economics revealed that in 2023, Oklahoma City welcomed 24.1 million visitors, resulting in an annual economic impact of $4.5 billion.

The study traced how visitor spending flows through the local economy, affecting employment, wages and tax revenues. This economic activity generated $358 million in state and local taxes, effectively saving Oklahoma City residents $1,326 in taxes they would otherwise pay.

In addition, Visit OKC’s annual report points out the impressive return on investment. For every dollar invested in Visit OKC, the city gains $68.55, demonstrating the essential role tourism plays as Oklahoma’s third-largest industry and a key driver of economic growth in the region.

“Our city’s vibrant tourism sector is a testament to the sales and marketing efforts of Visit OKC and our hospitality industry partners,” said Zac Craig, President of Visit OKC. “This recent study highlights the significance of tourism in our local economy and how, ultimately, tourism is a revenue generator for the city, advancing the city’s priorities which improves quality of life for residents.”

Visit OKC’s Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) Annual Report released to city officials further demonstrates Oklahoma City’s growth, and how our city is now competing on a new tier when it comes to attracting conventions, sporting events and leisure travel.

Among the highlights are nearly 270 unique events supported by Visit OKC, close to 291,000 hotel room nights booked, and over 200 media articles promoting Oklahoma City as a desirable travel destination. The organization’s online reach also expanded, attracting nearly 2 million unique visitors to VisitOKC.com and generating 47 million social media impressions.

Greater OKC Chamber President and CEO Christy Gillenwater noted, “Today’s visitors become tomorrow’s residents. Tourism shapes perceptions of our city and intersects with economic development as new businesses consider relocating here. By promoting Oklahoma City as a premier tourism destination, we generate jobs, boost city revenue through visitor spending and raise positive awareness of our community.”

Continued investment in tourism not only fuels economic growth but also helps build a city that attracts people, businesses and opportunities. The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber is committed to supporting these efforts, ensuring that tourism remains a cornerstone of our city’s success and a key driver of future prosperity.
