OKC celebrates National Bike Month with events throughout May

By Lauren King / Events / May 2, 2025

Oklahoma City will celebrate National Bike Month in May with activities for cyclists of all ages and experience levels.

“May weather brings a great opportunity for our community to enjoy our bike lanes and trails around the city,” said Justin Henry, OKC transportation planner. “With so many of our new facilities like the Deep Fork Trail and the bike lanes being added by MAPS 4, more residents than ever are connected to our facilities. Group activities like Bike to Work Day and BikeFest are great opportunities for those new to cycling to meet and ride with more experienced cyclists.”

BikeFest—May 4

BikeFest 2025 is a free event from noon to 3 p.m. May 4 at Wheeler Park, 1120 S. Western Ave. Attendees can test demo bikes from local shops, get a free tune-up, listen to live music and order from a variety of food trucks. Kids can join safety demonstrations and decorate their bikes.

The festival brings together bike shops, outdoor retailers, fitness groups and local organizations to showcase their products to the OKC community. BikeFest is hosted by ACOG. Visit bikemonthok.org for more information.

National Bike and Roll to School Day—May 7

On May 7, families are encouraged to bike or roll to school. The city’s plan for bike infrastructure, bikewalkokc, focuses on building safer routes near schools and libraries.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School says riding and walking help children gain independence and improve quality of life.

Bike to Work Day—May 16

On May 16, cyclists can join Bike to Work Day at Bicentennial Park, 201 N. Walker Ave., from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Free coffee will be available. Riders can join organized groups or commute on their own.

Participants can ride on their own or join a group ride. Group rides include:

  • 6:30 a.m. – Midwest City Library, 8143 E. Reno Ave. Led by BikeOklahoma
  • 7 a.m. – Stars and Stripes Park, 3701 S. Lake Hefner Dr. Led by Celestial Cycles

Bike to Work Day is an annual event that promotes using bikes for transportation. Other central Oklahoma rides are listed at bikemonthok.org.

Hide and Go Bike

Hide and Go Bike is OKC’s largest weekly social ride, rolling out from Mesta Park every Thursday evening from April through November. Each week features a new 10-mile route along city-designated bike paths, promoting health, community and visibility for cyclists. For more information, follow @HideandGoBike on Instagram.

The city expands bike infrastructure

Construction continues on new bike lanes funded through MAPS 4, the Better Streets, Safer City bond and grants. The city chooses locations based on the bikewalkokc plan, which identifies routes that connect neighborhoods and destinations.

OKC builds protected lanes, multi-use trails, standard lanes and shared routes. View a map of active projects at okc.gov.

The city’s trail network supports walking and biking access across most of OKC. Visit okc.gov to explore an interactive map showing trail distances and routes.

“MAPS 4 alone will spend more about $30 million on bike lanes and trails around Oklahoma City, and that work has only just begun,” Henry said.

Bike safety

Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians all share responsibility to watch out for each other and follow the rules of the road.
