A brush with change: Art exhibition empowers homeless artists in OKC

The Fresh stART Public Showcase on Friday, Oct. 27, in Oklahoma City offers a unique opportunity to explore and acquire remarkable pieces of art created by talented guests from the Homeless Alliance Day Shelter. The artwork incorporates various mediums such as mixed media, watercolor, collage acrylic and colored pencil, showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions. This event goes beyond a mere art exhibition; it is a creative platform that assists in transforming lives. 

Fresh stART is an open-studio program initiated by the Homeless Alliance, providing a nurturing and supportive environment for individuals without homes in Oklahoma City to express themselves through art. The program not only gives participants a sense of purpose and a creative outlet but also offers opportunities for skills development. Through the therapeutic act of creating art, participants learn to manage emotional challenges, refine their social skills, boost their self-esteem, and acquire skills that can open doors to future employment. 

“Fresh stART provides an enriching experience that show our artists that their ideas matter,” said Dan Straughan, executive director at Homeless Alliance. 

The Fresh stART art show is a free, public event that provides an opportunity to support a meaningful cause. When you purchase artwork at this event, a significant 80% of the proceeds directly benefit the artists involved, helping them regain their independence and stability. The remaining 20% of the sale proceeds are reinvested in the program to cover art supply costs, ensuring its ongoing success. Community support extends beyond art purchases and represents an investment in the dreams and aspirations of our neighbor’s experiencing homelessness. 

Fresh stART operates twice a week at the Homeless Alliance's Day Shelter, providing a safe space for artistic expression. Community involvement is crucial for the program's success, including the donation of art supplies. By contributing, you actively participate in empowering these artists and providing them with the tools they need to thrive. 

View the art created by our neighbors on Friday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the WestTown Resource Center lobby. Parking is available on Northwest Third Street and Virginia Avenue.
