The Freedom Center of Oklahoma City, LLC has been selected as the operator of the MAPS 4 Clara Luper Civil Rights Center.

The nonprofit, established to educate and empower the community regarding the Civil Rights Movement in Oklahoma, will now operate this $26.8 million project.

MAPS 4 plans for the new facility to include interpretive civil rights exhibitions, community gathering spaces, and educational programming. Operations and long-term maintenance have been budgeted for, as well. The goal for the facility is to further the public’s understanding of Oklahoma City’s civil rights history, and the significance of the local community’s efforts in ending segregationist policies across the country.

“The purpose of this significant center is to encourage continuous learning, foster civic engagement, build community and cultivate a sense of belonging,” Project Director for the Freedom Center of Oklahoma City, Christina Beatty told the city.

Beatty said the Clara Luper Civil Rights Center will not only help preserve the city’s history but will serve as a contemporary resource and gathering space for the community, as well.

The center is scheduled to begin construction by Fall of 2024 and will be located near Northeast 25th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard.
