Breaking Barriers: OKCPS Foundation's pipeline programs yield new generation of leaders

The Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation is celebrating the first 10 graduates of the Aspiring Administrators Pipeline Program and the two newest graduates of the Bilingual & Diversity Teacher Pipeline Program. These programs, spearheaded by the OKCPS Foundation in collaboration with district leaders and local and state partners, have opened doors to countless educational opportunities.
Paving the Way for Future Educators and Leaders
The goal of the no-cost programs is to nurture future educators and leaders. This initiative not only facilitates educational advancement but also ensures that participants can pursue their dreams without the burden of college debt.
"Without the financial support and the establishment of this cohort, our members' achievements in completing a master’s degree would have been uncertain," said Jennifer Reyes-Garcia, a graduate of the Fall 2023 Aspiring Administrator Pipeline Program.
These programs empower OKCPS educators to earn their master's in educational leadership, while paraprofessionals in the district are supported in obtaining their undergraduate degrees and teacher certification.
Addressing Educational Needs Through Diversity
Initiated in 2016, the Foundation's Bilingual and Diversity Teacher Pipeline Programs aim to cultivate a diverse teacher workforce that reflects the rich tapestry of the district’s student body. This approach is crucial in addressing the nationwide teacher shortage. Recognizing the success of these programs, the Foundation broadened its scope to include the OKCPS High School to Teacher Pipeline Program and the Aspiring Administrator Pipeline Program.
“Having passionate educators and leaders who understand our district’s unique culture is critical for our students to be successful in the classroom and beyond,” said OKCPS Superintendent Dr. Sean McDaniel.
The Impact of “Grow Your Own” Programs
“Recruiting, developing and retaining urban-ready, top-quality teachers and leaders is one of our core focus areas,” said Mary Mélon-Tully, president and CEO of the OKCPS Foundation. “These ‘Grow Your Own’ programs are a unique and effective way to help the district address teacher and leader shortages, increase educator diversity and further empower our educators to change their lives, their families’ lives and our students' lives for the better.”
Community Support: A Pillar of Success
The Foundation's impactful initiatives are made possible through the generous support of community partners and educational institutions such as the University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Community College, Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City, Rose State College and the Kirkpatrick Foundation. Their contributions are not just financial but also reflect a deep commitment to investing in the future of education.
Looking Ahead
The future looks bright, with 65 participants currently in the Bilingual & Diversity Teacher Pipeline Program and 72 anticipated for Spring 2024. To date, 20 have completed the program, equipped with teaching degrees and ready to make a difference.
