CJAC, Diversion Hub receive $1.6 million grant to grow diversion program

In a significant stride toward reshaping the landscape of Oklahoma County's criminal justice system, the Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Advisory Council (CJAC) and the Oklahoma County Diversion Hub have received a $1.6 million federal grant. This grant from the U.S. Department of Justice aims to extend the Diversion Hub’s Misdemeanor Diversion Program, which helps individuals receive treatment for substance use. 

CJAC and the Diversion Hub joined forces earlier this year to implement the program within the Oklahoma County District Court. This three-year grant allows more people to participate in the recovery program. As part of the expansion, the Diversion Hub will hire a dedicated data analyst and development officer to plan for future diversion programming. 

“The grant will serve as a lifeline for the Diversion Hub and various community partner organizations, empowering them to extend the crucial treatment necessary for the recovery of low-level, nonviolent offenders. These individuals pose no danger to themselves or the community and stand to gain nothing from incarceration," said CJAC Executive Director Timothy Tardibono. 

Meagan Taylor, the executive director of the Diversion Hub, echoed that sentiment. 

“We are thrilled that this grant will enable us to reach out to more Oklahomans. With these additional funds, we anticipate supporting a minimum of 1,000 more community members grappling with substance abuse and mental health challenges," said Taylor. 

A pivotal aspect of this initiative involves collaborating with Catalyst Behavioral Services, an Oklahoma City-based rehabilitation center. Thanks to the funding, Catalyst will be able to provide vital treatment services at the Diversion Hub. The partnership aligns with the Diversion Hub’s mission of providing a centralized location for comprehensive, life-stabilizing services. 

CJAC, a task force of business and community leaders, law enforcement professionals, nonprofit service providers, attorneys and judges, is at the forefront of this mission. Their shared vision revolves around cultivating a justice system where every individual, regardless of their past mistakes, is treated with respect and dignity.
