Work has started on a new bike and pedestrian bridge crossing the Oklahoma River at Eastern Avenue, just north of the OKANA Resort and Indoor Waterpark. This bridge is the first of two pedestrian bridges funded by the City as part of the MAPS 4 project.
The new MAPS 4 bridge will link the south shore trail to the four-mile Greenway River Trail on the north shore. Spanning 614 feet in length and 20 feet in width, the bridge will be constructed from concrete and steel and will feature lighting.
The project is expected to take approximately one year to complete and will cost around $5.7 million. Construction will involve the use of barges, with temporary work stoppages planned for two major Riversport OKC events.
“The public space transformation project is part of the $154-million package dedicated to improving our city’s parks system,” said David Todd, MAPS manager. “The pedestrian bridge will provide a unique view of the Oklahoma River and make a needed connection to the Greenway Trail.”
The Greenway River Trail will be closed between the Boathouse District and Eastern Avenue during the construction of the MAPS 4 bridge, expected to last about a year. To avoid dead ends, cyclists and runners can exit the Katy Trail at Douglass Park, head west on NE 4th Street to Russell M. Perry Avenue, and then proceed south into Bricktown to reconnect to the Boathouse District and the North River Trail at Regatta Park.
In late 2024, construction will begin on a $2.5 million low-water dam between Eastern Avenue and Reno Avenue. This dam will extend the Oklahoma River basin to the east and improve the river’s appearance. The project will also include building a new landing for Oklahoma River Cruises.
