Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership, a nonprofit community development and downtown management organization, stands behind the flourishing downtown Oklahoma City. One of its initiatives, the Mural Grant Program, has played an essential role in advocating for creativity and culture, assisting in the city earning a well-deserved spot in USA Today's Best City for Street Art back in 2022, securing a remarkable two-year streak.
Kristen Vails, the Director of Place Management with Downtown OKC, reflects on the beginnings of this impactful initiative. She explains, "This idea came out of a desire to incentivize property owners to install murals on their buildings."
This vision materialized into the Mural Grant Program, an innovative approach that not only supports property owners but also empowers artists to actively contribute to the community and city-wide growth.
The program offers a unique opportunity for property owners and artists, providing grants of up to $5,000 or 25% of the total mural cost. This financial backing can be allocated to the project budget or directly to the artist, an incentive for engagement in this transformative process. To facilitate a seamless application process, Downtown OKC extends support by providing sample contracts tailored for both property owners and artists.
The Mural Grant Program focuses on private properties within the broader downtown OKC area, spanning from NW 13th to I-40 and Western Ave to Lottie Ave. To ensure the quality and legality of each project, all murals must undergo the proper permitting process with the City of Oklahoma City.
Whether you're a passionate property owner envisioning transformation or an artist eager to leave your mark, this program serves as your gateway to making a lasting impact. Applications are on-going and open to property owners or entities responsible for coordinating mural projects within the designated downtown area.
