The Garden Oaks Community Center has recently opened its doors, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of northeast Oklahoma City. Spearheaded by the Alpha Community Foundation of Oklahoma, an initiative led by members of the Beta Eta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., this event proved the community's commitment to fostering civic engagement, education, health and wellness.

At its grand opening, the center unveiled a range of amenities, including a community garden, library, and STEM lab, welcoming individuals of all ages to participate in educational programs tailored from Pre-K to 12th grade, college, vocational-technical students and seniors.

Situated at 3401 NE 16th Street, the center is housed in a repurposed former Oklahoma City Public School building, with a goal of providing resources aimed at facilitating community development. Specialized mentoring and tutoring areas have been established to address the specific needs of local students, ensuring equal access to educational opportunities. The journey leading up to this momentous occasion has been characterized by determination, with the Alpha Community Foundation playing a pivotal role.

Since January 2021, the initiative has garnered over $1,000,000 in funding through grants, fundraising efforts, and community contributions, including the generous $5,000 donation from OG&E. The grand opening festivities displayed the power of collaboration, uniting leaders, businesses and residents in celebration of community progress.

Looking ahead, the Garden Oaks Community Center remains committed to expanding its roster of community programs, envisioning a coalition of organizations and nonprofits to support an array of classes, events, entertainment and sports activities. Plans also include the continuation of after-school programs, with a focus on maintaining and cultivating the Garden Oaks School building and surrounding land.

Additionally, the facility will feature business incubator space, affordable lease options for local businesses, conference rooms for local organizations, a computer lab, library, and multi-purpose areas suitable for recreational activities, martial arts, dance and music recording studios. This comprehensive approach reflects the center's dedication to fostering hope and growth in northeast Oklahoma City.
