Navigating the new normal at Will Rogers World Airport: Arrive early

By Kelly Dexter / Inside OKC / January 5, 2024

Gone are the days when you could breeze through Will Rogers World Airport (WRWA) just an hour before your flight. As Oklahoma City continues to grow, both in population and as a tourist destination, the airport experience is evolving. So, you better adapt if you don’t want to miss the boat – or plane in this case.

The End of an Era

For years, we’ve enjoyed the luxury of arriving at Will Rogers just an hour before departure, confident we'd make it through check-in and security with time to spare. However, with Oklahoma City's rapid growth – now home to over 1.4 million people and ranking as the 20th most populous city in the U.S. – those relaxed days are a thing of the past.

New Airport Advisory

Airport officials now advise passengers to arrive at the airport terminal two hours early, year-round. This recommendation is especially pertinent during the morning rush hours from 4 to 7 a.m., which sees approximately 2,300 travelers or 767 people per hour.

Travel Tips for a Smooth Experience

  • Arrive Early: Aim to be at the terminal at least two hours before your flight boards. This buffer gives you ample time to find parking, head to the ticket counter and pass through security without stress.
  • Early Check-In: Remember that most airlines close the check-in process 30-45 minutes before departure. Always confirm these details with your airline in advance.
  • Security Checkpoint Preparedness: Ensure that your carry-on is free of prohibited items. Visit tsa.gov/travel for a detailed list of what's allowed and what's not.
  • Firearm Regulations: Firearms are not permitted in carry-ons or within the terminal building. If you must travel with a firearm, it should be unloaded, locked in a case and declared to the airline.
  • Liquids, Gels and Aerosols: Follow the 3-1-1 rule — liquids, gels and aerosols should fit in a one-quart bag and each container must be 3.4 ounces or less.

For Those Picking Up Travelers

No parking or waiting is allowed at the terminal curbside on both upper and lower levels. Only active loading is permitted.

Use the cell phone lot or hourly parking for waiting. The cell phone lot is free, and hourly parking charges $2 per hour.

OKC’s Exciting Evolution

The changes at Will Rogers World Airport reflect Oklahoma City's rapid growth and burgeoning status as a major metropolitan and tourist destination. While it means adjusting to earlier arrivals and more preparation, these changes are part of the city's exciting evolution. By planning ahead and staying informed, travelers can ensure a smooth and stress-free start to their journey, whether they're flying out or welcoming guests to the heart of Oklahoma.
