OKC plans grand opening for new Senior Health and Wellness Center

Oklahoma City will open its third Senior Health and Wellness Center next month. Nestled at the intersection of NE 36th St. and Lincoln Blvd., this state-of-the-art $11.7 million facility will open its doors debt-free. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Dec. 7.
The project is part of the voter-approved MAPS 3 plan, which called for the construction of four senior wellness centers—the first two centers, located at 11501 N. Rockwell Ave and 4021 S. Walker Ave, opened in 2017 and 2018, respectively. However, due to construction challenges, the opening of the Lincoln Boulevard facility, along with the fourth center under construction at 13660 S. Western Ave, faced delays. Despite these setbacks, the city anticipates a spring 2024 opening for the fourth center, which will be operated by the YMCA.
The third Senior Health and Wellness Center offers a wide array of amenities. The facility includes a heated combination lap and therapy pool, fitness center, gym, game room, classroom, computer area, demonstration kitchen, gathering spaces and an elevated indoor walking and jogging track. In addition to recreational classes for quilting and gardening, members can also access health resources such as physical therapy, health education and cooking demonstrations.
Membership is $25 per month. Fees are based on a sliding fee schedule, ensuring that nobody is left out due to financial constraints. Scholarships are also available.
Looking ahead, the city’s commitment to senior welfare continues with MAPS 4, which allocated $31.7 million for the construction of a fifth senior wellness center. This allocation also includes financial assistance programs aimed at supporting low-income seniors.
Oklahoma City’s journey toward creating a healthier and more vibrant community for its seniors is a testament to its dedication to its residents. As these centers open their doors, they not only provide avenues for physical fitness and mental well-being but also foster a sense of community and belonging.
