OKC's NW Rapid bus line prepares to begin service

Oklahoma City is gearing up for a progressive shift in public transportation as the RAPID NW Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line prepares to roll into service on Dec. 4. The eagerly anticipated line promises efficient connectivity, reduced commute times and improved accessibility across a 9.5-mile stretch from downtown Oklahoma City to Northwest Expressway and Meridian Avenue.
Here is an overview of what the RAPID NW line offers:
Frequency and Coverage
The RAPID NW line will operate Monday-Thursday from 5 a.m. to midnight, Friday from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. This comprehensive schedule was established to meet the needs of diverse commuters throughout the week.
Operating seven days a week, the RAPID NW line has 32 stops along its route, ensuring that nearly 40,000 residents and workers in the area have convenient access. During peak hours, buses will run with a frequency of 12 to 15 minutes in both directions, facilitating seamless travel for the 91,000 jobs situated within its reach.
Innovative Design for Timely Arrivals
A key feature of the RAPID NW line is its commitment to timely arrivals. Signal prioritization, a modern design element, ensures that buses encounter minimal disruptions en route. The feature makes sure traffic lights remain green or quickly transitions to green as the RAPID bus approaches.
Efficient Boarding and Unloading
Enhancing the commuter experience, the RAPID NW line offers swift loading and unloading times, mirroring the efficiency of subway platforms. With a mere 20-second window per stop, the buses align with platform levels, allowing passengers of all mobility levels to easily enter or exit the vehicle.
Seamless Transactions & Station Amenities
To further streamline the boarding process, ticket kiosks at each station eliminate onboard transactions. Commuters can conveniently purchase tickets before boarding, ensuring a smooth flow of passengers.
The enhanced transit experience also includes real-time arrival displays, wayfinding pylons, handrails, bike racks, shelters, benches and trash receptacles.
The RAPID NW line marks a stride in Oklahoma City's public transportation evolution. With its innovative design, commitment to punctuality, and seamless integration into the larger EMBARK network, this transit system is prepared to redefine urban mobility for the residents and workers along its route.
Fueled by the MAPS 4 initiative, a debt-free public improvement program funded by a temporary penny sales tax, the RAPID NW line represents just the beginning. With $87 million dedicated to public transit improvements, including $60 million for advanced transit options, the MAPS 4 Transit package paves the way for future developments, potentially including the RAPID South and East lines.
