OKC unveils winter weather metro snow routes to enhance safety and travel efficiency

By Chamber Staff / Inside OKC / December 26, 2024

ACOG has completed the 2024-2025 Regional Snow Route Map to help guide drivers through Central Oklahoma roadways when they are covered in snow.

Originally created in 2007, the Regional Snow Routes system coordinates snow and ice removal to improve safety for all citizens and travelers throughout the Oklahoma City region, including emergency vehicles, school buses, public transit and commercial vehicles.

The map was reviewed by more than 30 local governments to identify priority routes for snow and ice clearing within their jurisdictions. The system ensures coordination between multiple cities and counties, so traffic flow is maintained, and snowplows have unimpeded access to roadways.

Sixteen cities, four counties and several state agencies in the Oklahoma City metro area collaborated to create the network of snow routes, which spans from Guthrie to Lexington and Yukon to Harrah.

In the event of heavy snow, ice or freezing rain, EMBARK buses may be detoured or canceled. Some routes may be temporarily inaccessible if road conditions become too hazardous.

It is encouraged that travelers have a winter weather vehicle emergency preparedness kit, which may include:

  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Jumper cables
  • Fire extinguisher (5 lb., A-B-C type)
  • Compass and road maps
  • Shovel
  • Tire repair kit and pump
  • Flares
  • Extra clothing to keep dry and gloves
  • Sack of sand or cat litter for tire traction
  • Tow rope
