OKCPS 8th grade Career Expo aims to get students on track

By Nate Fisher / Inside OKC / October 10, 2018

The 4th annual Oklahoma City Public Schools 8th Grade Career Expo is set for November 16 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., and organizers are looking for representatives from the business, industry, post-secondary, military and government communities to participate.

The Career Expo, which will be held at Oklahoma City Community College, gives 8th graders a leg up when it comes to choosing a career path. Students will begin their day by going through a "Career Session" that will reinforce the idea of choosing a true pathway of study that helps lead them toward success when it comes to choosing and developing their future career options. The students will be able to then interact with representatives from different industries and areas, and will emerge from the event with a personal "Course Planner" that outlines what they need to do in high school and beyond in order to arrive at their chosen career destination.

Last year, more than 2,000 8th graders participated in the event. Organizers are planning three main cluster areas and are looking for representatives to participate:

  • Aviation, Law & Public Safety, Construction, Engineering, Manufacturing, Transportation
  • Business, Finance, Audio Visual, Information Technology, Fine Arts
  • Education & Training, Health Science, Hospitality & Tourism, Culinary, Agriculture
