OKCPS launches new initiative to foster community connections, boost student success

In an effort to strengthen community ties and enhance educational experiences, Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) recently hosted a Community and Family Engagement (CAFÉ) event at John Marshall Enterprise High School. This event marked a significant step in the implementation of the School Connect initiative, a new community partnership model.
The program aims to create a dynamic network of community partners, businesses, nonprofits, families and individuals working together to support OKCPS schools, students and teachers. The ultimate goal is to establish lasting and mutually beneficial relationships, addressing critical needs in three key focus areas: teacher retention, staff and student attendance, and learning environment.
"Engagement with our community is critical to the success of our district, whether through partnerships, volunteering or in-kind donations," said Dr. Sean McDaniel, OKCPS superintendent.
The CAFÉ event at John Marshall Enterprise High School brought together more than 30 participants representing approximately 18 organizations. Students and staff from both John Marshall Enterprise High School and Middle School took part, presenting insightful statistics about their respective schools and articulating their needs. This collaborative platform facilitated meaningful connections between school leaders and community partners.
One notable example of the impact of these connections is the collaboration with Tinker Federal Credit Union, which is providing meals for teachers during professional development days. This initiative directly supports the "teacher retention" focus area, contributing to a positive and supportive learning environment for educators.
"Relationships are at the heart of this model – it’s important for our partners to connect with the schools they support and to engage directly with the students and the staff their efforts benefit," said Mary Mélon-Tully, CEO and president of the OKCPS Foundation.
