OKC takes steps toward safer streets with Vision Zero Plan

Crashes on Oklahoma City roads have surged in recent years, with traffic deaths increasing by 34% in 2021 alone, leading to 99 tragic fatalities. The alarming rise in these incidents highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to make our roadways safer for everyone.
In response, the City of Oklahoma City is launching the Vision Zero Plan, an initiative aimed at eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our streets. The plan is focused not only on reducing statistics but on ensuring that everyone—whether traveling by car, on foot, by bike or using public transportation—can move safely throughout the city.
Most fatal crashes in Oklahoma City occur on streets with speed limits of 45 miles per hour or higher or on roads with poor lighting—conditions that make these areas particularly dangerous. The Vision Zero Plan targets these high-risk factors with specific safety improvements in critical areas. By analyzing crash data, the city will implement measures designed to protect all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and transit riders.
The Vision Zero approach prioritizes safety over speed and convenience. It includes designing streets and transportation systems with features such as lower speed limits, improved lighting, protected bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly crossings. This strategy emphasizes shared responsibility among road users and uses data-driven decision-making to address high-risk locations and contributing factors.
This initiative is made possible through federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, underscoring the national recognition of the importance of this work. The Vision Zero approach, which originated in Sweden in the 1990s, has been proven effective across Europe and is now gaining momentum in major cities across the United States.
The success of the Vision Zero Plan hinges on community involvement. The city has launched a roadway safety survey to gather input from residents about their experiences and concerns with all modes of transportation.
Public participation in this survey is crucial, as it will directly inform the plan’s development by identifying high-risk locations and contributing factors to crashes. By sharing your insights, you can play a vital role in shaping the future of transportation safety in Oklahoma City.
The Vision Zero Planning team is set to finalize the plan for adoption in 2025, but the work starts now.
