By Chamber Staff / Inside OKC / April 7, 2025

Oklahoma ranked No. 9 in the World Population Review’s study of the friendliest states, placing the state within the top 10 and just ahead of Hawaii. Oklahoma was voted No. 9 by tourists traveling in 2023.

To describe Oklahoma’s friendliness, the World Population Review stated, “People in Oklahoma are amicable and always look after their communities (and visitors). Oklahoma City is even nicknamed ‘The Big Friendly’ because of its kind residents.”

The publication reviewed two categories of data—personal experience, as well as the 2.5 million Big 7 Travel social media followers—to determine which U.S. states are the friendliest.

In addition to Big 7 Travel’s survey, the World Population Review also looked at Zippia’s list of each state’s average tipping rate to provide further insight into the friendliest states. The average tip for Oklahoma that year was 19.2%, placing the state at No. 14 when ranking by tip amount.

This ranking, along with the specific mention of OKC, highlights the city's reputation for hospitality. The accolade reinforces OKC’s identity as a welcoming place for newcomers and visitors, reflecting its nickname, The Big Friendly.
