RAPID NW celebrates first anniversary in OKC, marking key transit milestone
As Oklahoma City continues to grow, expanding public transportation infrastructure is becoming more important. RAPID NW, the region’s first bus rapid transit service, marked its first anniversary and is already playing a key role in meeting the city’s growing transit needs. Serving more than 450,000 riders in its first year, RAPID NW is designed to connect major areas of the city, including workplaces, shopping centers, medical facilities, and entertainment spots.
The $28.9 million RAPID NW Line was funded by the City of Oklahoma City, the Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority (COTPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The service is helping to reduce traffic congestion and offering a reliable alternative for those who need quick access to key destinations. With expectations to surpass 500,000 riders by January 2025, RAPID NW is becoming a vital part of daily life for many residents.
“The RAPID NW provides a new amenity that 40,000 residents can walk to, knowing that within 12-15 minutes, a comfortable bus will arrive to take them to their destination, without having to navigate traffic or park,” said Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt. “This could be a life-changing amenity for the residents along this line, especially those who haven’t been users of our public transit system in the past.”
The growth of RAPID NW is part of Oklahoma City’s larger strategy to build infrastructure that supports long-term expansion. In July 2024, the Oklahoma City Council approved a second 17-mile BRT line under MAPS 4, which will connect northeast and south Oklahoma City with 26 stops. This expansion will serve more residents, connect more communities, and improve mobility across the region.
As the city adds more residents and businesses, public transit options like RAPID NW will be critical in managing that growth. The service offers a way to connect neighborhoods and reduce reliance on cars, which is essential for a more sustainable and walkable city. RAPID NW is not just a transportation option; it’s a key element of Oklahoma City’s effort to grow in a way that benefits everyone.
In addition, EMBARK is celebrating the anniversary with a contest and bi-annual Half-Price Sale on passes for RAPID NW, OKC Streetcar and EMBARK buses. The First Anniversary Contest runs from December 4 to December 18, with prizes including unlimited rides on EMBARK services for a year.
RAPID NW is helping Oklahoma City meet the demands of a growing population while laying the foundation for future growth and sustainability. As the city continues to expand, public transit will remain an essential part of its evolving urban landscape.
