RIVERSPORT hosts 2024 Olympic Team Trials

By Selena Romero / Inside OKC / April 18, 2024

Oklahoma City’s RIVERSPORT will host the 2024 Olympic Team Trials for Canoe/Kayak Slalom and Kayak Cross, taking place along the scenic Oklahoma River on April 26 and 27. Athletes from across the nation will compete for spots on the United States team for the 2024 Paris Games.

These trials mark the culmination of efforts to position Oklahoma City as a premier destination for water sports, thanks to the transformative impact of the MAPS 3 initiative. MAPS 3 funding facilitated the development of RIVERSPORT Whitewater Center and upgrades to adjacent rowing facilities, solidifying Oklahoma City's reputation as a top-tier venue for aquatic sports.

The event will feature the Olympic Canoe/Kayak Slalom trial event, where athletes will navigate the rapids through both downstream and upstream gates for time, with spectators positioned along the channel to witness the thrilling action unfold.

Additionally, the introduction of Kayak Cross to the Olympic Games, set to debut in Paris, adds a new dimension to the trials. Kayakers will launch side-by-side from a ramp positioned 10 feet above the water's surface, on a high-speed dash to the finish line. This race will test their speed, agility and technical skills, as they execute a series of maneuvers including daring 360-degree rolls -  showcasing the athletes' remarkable ability and precision.

The event, open to the public with free admission, runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days, offering intense competitions, live music and a fireworks display. Attendees can also enjoy the Olympic Experience, featuring opportunities to try various Olympic sports, with children earning a gold medal for participating in all activities, that willensure a fun-filled weekend for the whole family.

RIVERSPORT has a rich history of hosting national and international canoe/kayak race events, including the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Canoe Slalom and the 2022 ICF Canoe Sprint Super Cup. Looking ahead, RIVERSPORT will host several upcoming international events, including the 2025 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Cup. A milestone achievement awaits in 2026, as RIVERSPORT is set to host the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships.

As preparations for the trials continue, RIVERSPORT actively seeks volunteers to help stage this monumental event. For the full event schedule and volunteer opportunities, visit RIVERSPORT's website.
