Rolling Thunder Book Bus rolls into Rogers Middle School, spreading literacy and smiles

Earlier this week, Rogers Middle School buzzed with excitement as Oklahoma City Thunder basketball players walked the halls, bringing with them not just the thrill of the game but also the joy of reading. As part of an all-day school takeover, players Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Jaylin Williams and Aaron Wiggins, participated in a heartwarming initiative aimed at fostering a love for literature among young students.

The Rolling Thunder Book Bus

The Rolling Thunder Book Bus, presented by the American Fidelity Assurance Company, is a statewide outreach program designed to inspire children to develop a passion for reading. The Book Bus itself is a marvel, adorned with Thunder colors and equipped with over 2,000 fiction and non-fiction books. Its interior boasts shelves stacked with literary treasures, alongside memorabilia signed by players, jerseys, shoes and Thunder swag. A built-in television adds to the immersive experience, showcasing videos that ignite the imagination.

Community Commitment

Jalen Williams emphasized the significance of reaching out to the community.

"It's cool to be able to do stuff like this. It's always good to come out here," Williams remarked. He recognized their presence's impact, especially for students who might not attend games. "I think it means a lot and probably goes a lot further than we even recognize in the moment."

A Day of Inspiration

The visit wasn't just about distributing books; it was about creating lasting memories. The players engaged with students, helped them select books, distributed free bookmarks and even surprised teachers with treats in the teachers’ lounge.

“It's so exciting for these students. They're going to go home and tell mom, dad, brother and sister all about their experience, and they'll remember this and talk about it for quite some time,” said Rodd Beer, the school’s assistant principal.

Thunder Takeover

The Thunder's involvement extended beyond the Book Bus initiative. Throughout the day, the school experienced a Thunder takeover, with PE classes led by Thunder Youth Basketball coaches, a visit from Rumble and the Thunder girls, and a special Reading Timeout featuring Thunder broadcast and digital reporter Paris Lawson.

Culture of Learning and Growth

Through initiatives like the Rolling Thunder Book Bus and their active involvement in the community, the Thunder continues to exemplify the power of sports in shaping young minds and fostering a culture of learning and growth.
