Staff Picks: our favorite pieces from VeloCity's first year

By Chamber Staff / Inside OKC / July 9, 2019

VeloCity staff had a great time doing research for the "Amid changes, Anthem Brewing Co grows with OKC's craft beer scene" piece.

  • OKC Streetcar how-to: Brewery taproom crawl” – February 22, 2019

I’m a huge fan of the streetcar, so it’s been fun to brainstorm ideas for and even write some of our streetcar content. But a few weeks ago while out and about riding the streetcar I overheard a couple reading word for word from this story. Turns out they were having an OKC staycation and doing the streetcar brewery crawl! They apparently aren’t the only ones because this story continues to get traffic despite being several months old.

  • Learn more about Oklahoma City Council candidates on the Feb. 12 ballot” – January 17, 2019

This is a weird favorite, but hear me out. Every election, big or small, the VeloCity team pulls together some content to help everyone have a better understanding of what’s included on the ballot. While it’s not the most glamorous or exciting story; based on the traffic we see to these types of stories it’s something that people in the community are finding helpful.

  • OKC Streetcar park and ride guide” – Dec. 13, 2018

I’ve referred a lot of people to this article—it’s super helpful and can make downtown visits a lot more practical.

  • Mixing it up at Factory Obscura” – January 25, 2019

Factory Obscura is one of the most underrated experiences in OKC and I think this piece gives a really good insight into what’s going on over there. The pictures are great, too!

  • New restaurant roundup: Paseo Arts District” – June 12, 2019

I actually had no idea just how quick the food scene around Paseo was growing til I read this—beyond just being a helpful guide of all the new restaurants in Paseo, it provides good insight into just how far OKC’s culinary scene is getting so quickly.

  • Scissortail Park Opens in 100 Days” – June 19, 2019

The excitement surrounding the opening of the new park is tangible and this story gives the inside scoop on elements the park will have for so many different groups of people. Can’t wait until Kings of Leon perform at the opening!

  • Food City – OKC’s Foodie Transformation” – Dec. 10, 2018

There’s an excellent video that goes with this story that does a great job showcasing the big things happening with restaurants in OKC.

  • It's quite a pickle: Sonic's new snow cone slush lineup, tested and paired” – June 18, 2018

One of my favorite aspects of VeloCity is the outlet it gives our staff for covering fun and unique stories. In this case, it was the launch of Sonic's new pickle slush (which I maintain could have been a little more savory) that inspired this fun riff on wine tasting and pairing. Since it is summer, now is the perfect time to revisit our notes so you can be inspired to go for your own afternoon treat.

  • Chamber holiday card Q&A: Dusty Gilpin” – Dec. 25, 2018

In 2018, the Chamber worked with OKC artist Dusty Gilpin to produce its annual holiday card. Chamber graphic designer Josh Vaughn, who is deeply involved in the Oklahoma City artistic community, sat down with Gilpin for this Q&A about the inspiration behind the design, Gilpin's own artistic journey and the art scene in Oklahoma City. I love Gilpin's thoughts about how the creative community can shape Oklahoma City's future.

  • Interview with Ward 5's David Greenwell: 'We can accomplish so much more when we work together'” – May 23, 2019

I loved learning more about Councilman Greenwell's own history (did you know he was part of the first graduating class of Oklahoma City Community College?) and how his eight years as a city council member and his past professional experience as CPA has shaped his approach to local government.

  • OKC Streetcar how-to: Brewery taproom crawl” – Feb. 22, 2019

I think this was a unique look on how to use the streetcar creatively. Even if the OKC Streetcar isn’t our primary form of transportation, it can add value to our daily experience. Finding ways to integrate the streetcar usage into our routines can give you a better appreciation of our city and what it has to offer.

  • The Wolf Man, Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and The Mummy are from Oklahoma City: The life and work of Lon Chaney, Jr.” – Oct. 31, 2018

This was a fun article to remind us that OKC produces some pretty amazing people who excel in whatever field they find themselves. There is something in our collective DNA that pushes us to great things and flourish in the face of adversity. We do the unexpected, the undoable, and we do it well.
