Unveiling of the Second ReadOKC On the Go! Book Bus

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, a new chapter began for literacy in Oklahoma City. Taft Middle School hosted the grand opening of the second ReadOKC On the Go! Book Bus, a project by the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation (OKCPS), in partnership with the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and other community allies. This exciting addition aims to boost reading skills and inspire a lifelong love for books among students. 

The first ReadOKC Book Bus started in 2021, distributing over 36,000 books across the district and enhancing student access to reading materials. Now, with two book buses, each school will receive an annual visit. One bus caters to elementary schools, while the other serves secondary schools, ensuring every OKCPS student leaves with a new book of their choice. The second bus brings tailored reading materials for newcomer students, particularly English language learners. This initiative acknowledges the diverse linguistic backgrounds within OKCPS, offering materials to aid newcomers in their language learning journey. 

Partnerships are a cornerstone of ReadOKC's success. “Today’s celebration is a reflection of our city’s ongoing commitment to literacy,” declared Dr. Sean McDaniel, OKCPS superintendent, as he highlighted the importance of these collaborations, making books available in multiple languages to foster a more inclusive school environment.  

Drew Dugan, vice president of education for the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, emphasized the broader impact of literacy, enhancing economic opportunities and community growth. 

“By investing in literacy, we can help ensure students leave high school prepared to take advantage of the opportunities that await,” he said. 

Beyond the Book Bus, ReadOKC encourages daily reading habits, mentorships and easy access to reading materials through Little Libraries in schools. Since its 2017 launch, ReadOKC has improved literacy, attendance and self-confidence among participating students. With a focus on all students and unwavering community support, this initiative will create a brighter future for the city.
