Art residency program returns to the Skirvin

Sometimes a reception is more than just a party. As the champagne flowed and the hors d'oeuvres were enjoyed, people filed in to meet the new artist taking up the residency at the historic downtown OKC Skirvin Hilton Hotel. This artist reception marked the return of the Artist in Residence (AIR) SPACE (Skirvin Paseo Artists Creativity Exposition) program. Friends old and new met in the familiar street-level studio to not only celebrate but in some way, collectively exhale. Over the course of the last year, the studio had been left largely abandoned due to the global pandemic we all have been enduring. The walls of this beautifully lit and cozy creative space sat empty for way too long. For months this artistic ambassador of OKC hasn’t been able to welcome visitors and patrons with its warm friendly embrace. That is changing. The space is once again buzzing with activity and adroit energy. With a largely anticipated sigh, a little bit of hope fills the room and the city with the return of this truly unique creative experience that the Skirvin Hilton Hotel and the Paseo Arts Association are thoughtfully bringing us once again.
“We are delighted to have our SPACE, Skirvin Paseo Artists Creativity Exposition, program back open at The Skirvin Hilton! This is a partnership that began in 2012 and continues to be highly sought after and was the first of its kind in the state of Oklahoma,” said Amanda Bleakley, executive director of the Paseo Arts Association.
To jumpstart the return of the residency, the Skirvin Hilton Hotel and the Paseo Arts Association conducted an extensive application and interview process. From those who applied, Petra Germany was selected to be the next AIR. Petra, an accomplished designer and producer of pop-culture jewelry for gamers, geeks, and cosplayers through Etsy, conventions, and personal commissions. She will serve as AIR from July 1, 2021, through January 2022.
Petra invites guests of all ages to an in-depth experience in character creation. She will be offering local residents opportunities to discover some of the various creative techniques in costume design. She plans on creating a detailed costume and a series of props per month, with materials sourced from local businesses wherever possible. She will offer themed workshops for all skill levels on costuming basics such as pattern making, sewing, leatherworking and even prop design. Her inspiration comes from a varied interest in the genres of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Historical, and even Western. Visitors will be able to experience in person the various costumes, props, and even be able to take photos with Petra in costumed character. Small accessories and craft kits will be available for sale. All projects are family-friendly, non-hazardous and compliant with COVID-19 safety protocols.
“We are proud to again partner with the Paseo Arts Association showcasing our city’s diverse art community and providing a platform to challenge, enlighten and creatively engage our guests,” said Skip Harless, General Manager of The Skirvin. “It was immediately apparent that Petra’s energy and fresh approach to engaging others with her unique art was perfect for the restart of this program. We are thrilled to have her in our Space and cannot wait for everyone to experience Petra in action!”
