Ask the Chamber: How do I get around with EMBARK?

By Tony Nguyen / Lifestyle / October 11, 2022

Venturing through Oklahoma City could not be easier. As the city continues to grow, our transportation department takes the lead in the expansion and offerings for visitors and residents to travel around town. No matter where you are in the city, it is hard to ignore the white EMBARK buses on the streets throughout the day.

The transit system in Oklahoma City began in the mid-1960s. Over the past few decades, the transit operation underwent structuring and branding changes to meet the needs of the city and to attract customers with ease of riding, additional city routes and safety procedures. EMBARK was introduced in 2014 and the name continues to carry on today.

If you’re new to public transportation in Oklahoma City, A Better Life OKC has you covered with general tips and information to help plan your journey with EMBARK.

Preparing for the ride

  • Pick up a printed transit schedule at the transit service center or any public metropolitan library. Transit schedules are also available online.

  • After determining your route, be sure to arrive at the EMBARK bus stop five minutes before boarding time. It’s a good idea to know the frequency of bus stops as weekday and weekend times will vary. For convenience, all EMBARK buses will display the route number and destination name on the front windshield.

  • Riding rules are in place for passengers to note and follow. Please be aware of these guidelines before boarding any EMBARK or public transportation vehicle.

  • There are bell cords on the bus for passengers to pull to alert the operator to stop at the next point within the route.

Fares and passes

  • To ride with EMBARK, exact change is recommended. Token Transit or mobile fare payments are accepted. Passengers could also purchase passes at the transit service center.

  • Fares will vary from daily to monthly passes. Children under six are eligible to ride for free, while reduced rates are available to seniors, youth and disabled passengers.

Routes

EMBARK makes it simple for passengers to plan their journey. Routes are closely estimated on the printed transit schedule and on the schedule webpage.
