Black History Month in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City is set to celebrate Black History Month with a range of local activities and attractions in honor of the annual acclaim. While the list of local events planned is ongoing and everchanging, we’ve listed a few for you to check out:

  • Oklahoma Christian University – This local university will celebrate the contemporary efforts of “A Different World” stars Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison during a free discussion held on Feb. 6 from 7-9 p.m. The American sitcom which produced original episodes from 1987 until 1993 was inspired by student life at American historically Black colleges or universities – otherwise known as HBCUs.

  • Metro Technology Centers – A Black History Month festival will be held at the Metro Technology Center District Center, celebrating and supporting local Black-owned businesses on Feb. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event’s theme will be “Black History Rooted in Oklahoma.”
     
  • Oklahoma City Museum of Art – William H. Johnson’s “Fighters for Freedom” will be displayed at this local museum, beginning Feb. 18. The mid-1940s paintings present Black activists, scientists, teachers, performers and more. The featured works are provided by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and will be remain in Oklahoma City through May 14.

  • Oklahoma City Thunder – An art contest was held throughout the past months, inviting Oklahoma high school students to celebrate local Black history through different mediums. The four winners of the contest will be recognized during the Thunder’s game on Feb. 28. Artworks from the contest will be displayed throughout the arena during the game.

  • National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum – Heritage Activity Table: Black History will be held at this historic museum during February, highlighting different perspectives of Black history in the American West. The museum will showcase contributors such as Buffalo Soldiers and their role in the West as part of the month-long activity.
