Dust off your clubs and get out on the greens

If you’re ready to dust off the clubs and get out on the greens, you’ll be happy to know that golfers have thrived in Oklahoma City since the early 1900s.
For a breeze you can count on to cool you off during the warm Oklahoma summers, visit the courses at Lake Hefner Golf Club. The club has two courses to choose from and is connected with four additional golf clubs throughout the city. At Lake Hefner, you can get a special $9 rate for sunset tee times. An Oklahoma sunset, well-maintained course, and lake view complete the recipe for an awestruck golf session. Lake Hefner is only one of five fabulous public courses in OKC, along with Earlywine, Lincoln Park, Trospoer, and James E. Stewart. Check them out at okcgolf.com!
The Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club was one of the first courses built here in 1929 by Perry Maxwell and has provided a spot for competition and enjoyment ever since. Although it’s one of the easiest to find, given its stellar location and prime name choice, it is not the only option in Oklahoma City to enjoy the sport.
Also designed by Perry Maxwell, the construction of the Twin Hills Golf & Country Club’s 160-acre course preceded the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club by 6 years. Its history in Oklahoma City runs deep, but it is maintained as if the facility were built far more recently. Over the years, the club has hosted several prestigious tournaments, including the Western Amateur, PGA Championship, Western Jr. Open, Oklahoma City Open, National USGA Jr. Championship, and NAIA National Championship.
Gaillardia Country Club is another favorite spot for golfers in our city. They have an 18-hole course on 250-acres in the northwestern part of our community. For those who need new gear, want to support local, and aren’t yet ready to step into a brick and mortar, their online store offers a great selection of apparel and equipment to suit all of your needs.
The Greens Country Club opened in 1972, but has recently gone through course enhancements, making it a cutting-edge facility for individuals of all abilities. It is a great course for golfers who want a relaxed play and is a common choice for families.
Another course that was recently renovated is at Quail Creek Golf & Country Club. Known as a friendly-environment, Quail Creek offers ladies play groups on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, men’s and women’s play nights on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and various clinics throughout the year. It’s a great spot to find community and build skill.
If you’re willing to make a drive just north of the city to Edmond, Oak Tree National won’t let you down. Their 640-acre countryside course was designed for challenge, weaving through oak forests, streams, lakes, and plenty of bumps and hollows, this course has been nationally recognized for its prestige.
With multiple public and private course options and a strong amateur and professional scene, there’s never a dull moment in the golfing community of Oklahoma City. This year’s tournament schedule is packed for those ready to compete, but anyone can enjoy a casual day on the greens without the pressure of performance.
