Entertainment, retail and food options galore in the historic Uptown District

By Tony Nguyen / Lifestyle / September 5, 2023

Residents of Oklahoma City know the majestic ambiance of the Uptown District and 23rd Street. The area has been a pillar of our city since its existence and continues to grow. If you are visiting our great city, the Uptown District is a can’t-miss destination.

The history of the Uptown District started with the establishment of Oklahoma City University in the early 1920s. As development of the surrounding land began to take shape, Oklahoma City’s population flourished. Drama, arts and entertainment acts were in demand, leading to the construction of the iconic Tower Theatre in 1937, which has been fully restored and is operating today.

Broadway Avenue is an instant pathway to and from the Uptown District and downtown Oklahoma City. Travelers from across the region find this ideal and convenient with access to major interstates within close proximity.

The Uptown District is Oklahoma City’s golden runway for entertainment, local shops and cultural flavors that embellishes how diverse and trendy the city has become. Stretching from NW 23rd and Broadway to Pennsylvania Avenue, the district is geographically a straightaway with the Asian and Paseo Arts Districts to its north and the Plaza and Midtown Districts to its south.

There’s so much to try and explore in the Uptown District. Historical landmarks such as the Gold Dome Building and Milk bottle building (now Milk Bottle Grocery) showcase the charm of the district. Check out live performances, galleries and entertainment at the aforementioned Tower Theatre. To satisfy your hunger, restaurants such as Cheever’s, Big Truck Tacos, Guyutes and local dining spots in Guernsey Park will have something on the menu to treat your taste buds.

If your curiosity of the area can’t wait or you want to experience something new, the annual Uptown Outside is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23. Uptown Outside is a communal block-party-style event featuring live music, fun and food. Everyone is welcome to attend. Make your plans today and be sure to visit their website for more information on the event.
