Go on a socially distant art search

Have you noticed that almost every corner of Oklahoma City has some public art to brighten up the space? It’s not a coincidence. Oklahoma City invests in public art by allocating 1 % from the construction cost of every new or renovated public building to works of art. That means the MAPS Convention Center, Scissortail Park and all of the voter-approved projects of general obligation bond issues and the MAPS programs include art components that everyone can freely enjoy!

So the next time you are out on a socially distant walk (remember we are still under a shelter-in-place order!), check out the murals in your neighborhood or the statues at your nearest park. Need help finding a few? Culture Now has compiled a list of Oklahoma City monuments and murals that you might see while out and about. Western Avenue is full of murals, starting at NW 36th Street then head north along Western. The Plaza District has an alley filled with murals, with paintings along many other walls as well. In downtown, take a stroll to see the art under the railroad bridges or the pieces tucked along the Bricktown Canal.
