Oklahoma City’s VZD’s Restaurant and Bar has been down this road before, but this time seems a little more final.

The renowned spot at 4200 N. Western for all things music and food is set to permanently close its doors in early September. The building’s owners have new plans for the property.

In a Facebook post, VZD’s shared gratitude for all the patronage and memories.

"To those that have continued to believe in us and support us, you know who you are, we love you and we thank you from the very bottom of our hearts,” the post read.

However, the post also suggested management was “working on potential next steps” to keep the soul of VZD’s alive in OKC.

The response to the news was palpable, with hundreds of people sharing their thoughts on the statement.

John Ludwig of OKC replied with disbelief on Facebook.

“Wow, can’t believe it,” Ludwig wrote. “It’s hard to think about Oklahoma City without VZD’s. Looking forward to what you guys do next.”

OKC-based rock band The Flannels wrote “it feels like the death of a close friend. Thank you for keeping the flame going so long.”

Marjie Shadid lamented the closing and wondered what can be done to stop it.

“So sad… VZD’s is an institution,” Shadid said. “I think a lot of us, me included, have taken it for granted it would always be here. Is there any way we can turn this around?”

VZD’s briefly closed in 2014 after 24 years of ownership under Chad Bleakley, who helped bring the location back to its musical roots that date back to 1976. Famous acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Chicks (previous known as Dixie Chicks), Faith No More, Buddy Guy and B.B. King have played to packed houses at VZD’s.

Local band Wakeland will perform back-to-back shows Sept. 1 and 2, on VZD’s last weekend of business.

More information can be found on VZD’s Facebook page.
