Learn your river
Perhaps nothing embodies OKC’s rise more than the story of the Oklahoma River. And it is quite the story! Our river has gone from necessary water source to entertainment venue to dangerous uncontrollable nuisance to embarrassing afterthought to world-class watersports venue, thanks to innovative, forward-looking leadership and MAPS investments. To help tell that story, we’ve got a six-chapter multimedia online feature called “A River’s Rise” just waiting for you over at www.greateroklahomacity.com/river.
Honestly, it’s a story with more twists and turns than the river itself (which, as you’ll learn, is quite a bit straighter than it used to be thanks to the Army Corps of Engineers). There’s a well-known quote about the Oklahoma River that parsimoniously encapsulates its history (that we’ll attribute to former Mayor Mick Cornett) that should pique your interest: “We used to mow it, and now we row it.” Check it out!
