Liichokoshkomo’ at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is an Oklahoma gem

Learning is easier, more fun and more rewarding when it’s done through play and hands-on experiences. The Annie Oakley Society understood that when it developed and established Liichokoshkomo’ at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
OKC Beautiful, a local non-profit that leads the city’s beautification and environmental stewardship, recently named Liichokoshkomo’ as the recipient of the 2023 Mayor’s Award.
Pronounced Lee-cho-kosh-ko-MO, the 2.3-acre STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) project aims to encourage children to take on a “hands-on, minds-on” approach to learning about the American West’s diverse story.
Liichokoshkomo’, which is Chickasaw for “let’s play,” includes representation of seven tribes (Caddo, Chickasaw, Hopi, Kiowa, Navajo, Pawnee and Ancient Puebloan), a pioneer wagon, trading post, rail car, playground and more. Family-friendly classes in grinding corn, dodging geysers and planning a westward wagon trip also take place.
Annie Oakley Society Manager Makenzi Northenor said in a press release that the society takes great pride in the project and its positive impact on education programs at the museum.
“Liichokoshkomo’ is at the core of what the Annie Oakley Society is all about: inspiring the present and empowering future generations through hands-on learning,” Northenor said.
