Making the transition to a new city can be a moving experience by following a few tips

Oklahoma City has seen a huge jump in its population over the last 10 or more years. So much so, it is now ranked as the 20th largest city in the U.S. When you have a population increase of that significance, that means lots of people are moving into your community from other cities, towns and states.
Summer can be one of the busiest times for moving. If you are selling your home, demand is usually at its highest in the summer. Children are also out of school, making it an ideal time for a family to move. Regardless of whether you choose to move yourself or hire professional movers, there is a boatload (or should I say moving van load!) of tips out there you can follow which could mean the difference between a smooth transition or a stress-filled experience. Below are just a few tips you can use to make your life easier on moving day.
- Reduce the stress of moving day by creating a checklist that will help guide you through the moving-day process, making changes when needed, even on the actual moving day. You also might want to think about making a move folder where you can store your important papers, contracts and documents pertaining to the move.
- Pack an overnight bag with a couple of changes of clothing, toiletries, medications, etc. You may also want to pack a box containing essential items you might need on your first night following the move, including toilet paper, plastic utensils, bottled water, paper plates, napkins, and so on. Also, if you have small children, think about packing their essential items in the box, like diapers and baby food. For pets, pack food, bowls, chew toys, leashes, litter box, etc.
- Speaking of children and pets, if you have either one and they are too young to help out during the move, you might consider asking relatives or friends if they could stay with them until after the move is complete.
- Pack as early as possible, placing heavier items in smaller boxes and lighter items in larger boxes. Label the outside of boxes with their eventual room destinations in order to save some time and confusion.
- Before you head out the door for the last time, do a complete walkthrough around the house to make sure nothing is inadvertently left behind. It might be near impossible to retrieve left-behind belongings later, especially if you are moving to OKC from out of state or from another country.
- Designate the kitchen as the first room you unpack. By doing this, it will make unpacking the other rooms in your new place seem easier. It may also give you a good space in which to eat your meals (take out or delivery) while still unpacking and also serve as a temporary office.
Moving is not an easy proposition for anyone but following these tips should make the whole process go smoother. Of course, these suggestions were just “tips” of the iceberg.
