Meet Monica Ybarra, an OKC transplant from Texas

By Marcus Elwell / Lifestyle / March 10, 2020

We know making your home in a brand-new city can be tough. As a new feature on our BetterLife website, we sat down with people who have recently relocated here to get their thoughts on Oklahoma City.

Meet Monica Ybarra, an attorney, who moved to Oklahoma City from Amarillo, Texas, in 2011.

What has been the biggest surprise about OKC to you?

It's been easy to able to find my niche in OKC, both in my professional endeavors and my community work. Having left behind an established professional and community network, I was worried about reestablishing that in OKC. However, what I found was that people were willing to help connect me to opportunities at every turn. The community wanted to help plug me in and find my niche.

What is your favorite thing about living in OKC?

The unique districts -- from Paseo Arts District, to the Plaza District, to Midtown and beyond -- the people and the city respect the charm of each district and strive to preserve it. It creates an attractive vibe that is special to OKC.

I also love the availability and affordability of so many entertainment options. From NBA games, to philharmonic performances, to Broadway shows, OKC offers so many entertainment choices that won’t break the bank.

What would you say to someone thinking about moving to OKC?

You will feel at home in no time! The people here, whether they’ve been here for generations or they recently relocated here, are very welcoming. They will embrace your talents and respect your contributions to the city.
