More options, resources available in OKC for individuals, families interested in cycling

A quick search on the internet reveals study after study showing the benefits of cycling, whether it’s physical, mental or social. Some reports have also revealed an increase in ridership since the beginning of the pandemic that has continued post-pandemic.
If you are a seasoned veteran of cycling or just a novice, you will be pleased to know that Oklahoma City has truly begun embracing this sport and casual activity more so than ever. Many new bike lanes have been added on city streets and lots of new and resurfaced biking trails are popping up, which adds up to about a dozen trails that cyclists can enjoy all across the city. Visit okc.gov/departments/parks-recreation/trails to see what trails are available and any updates involving closures or any other pertinent information you might need.
If you want to learn more about upcoming rides or races and other cycling-related activities and events, you may want to check out the websites or Facebook pages of local bike clubs. Some of the more active and popular clubs include the Oklahoma Bicycle Society, OKC Bicycle Riders, Team Bike Buddies, The Oklahoma Earthbike Fellowship and Hide & Go Bike. Urban Land Institute recently named Hide & Go Bike as a finalist for their 10th Annual Impact Awards for “Outstanding Community Building Effort.” These clubs may also provide information like how to get started with cycling, tips on buying a bike and purchasing the right clothing and gear.
There are also numerous bicycle shops throughout the Oklahoma City metro where you can purchase a bike, along with equipment and apparel. And, several shops even have competent mechanics onsite to address or fix any bicycle issue you might have. They may also offer maintenance classes for all you do-it-yourself wannabes!
Almost all of the bicycle shops sponsor their own weeknight or morning rides where cyclists come together for an enjoyable time of fellowship and exercise. Capitol Co-Op, Bike Lab, Celestial Cycles, Trek Bicycle Oklahoma City, Al’s Bicycles and Wheeler Dealer are just a few of the more popular shops located in and around OKC.
Whether you are new to the OKC area or have been here for a while already, and you have a desire to get connected with other like-minded people who may love cycling, we encourage you to reach out to any of the aforementioned cycling clubs and bike shops. As the old saying goes: “May your feet stay on the pedals and your eyes on the road!”
