New Liichokoshkomo’ exhibit, upcoming Prix de West highlight Cowboy Museum’s reopening

Yippee-ki-yay, mothers and fathers! Now you have a place to take your kids to learn about the West in a cool outdoor setting. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum reopened May 18, albeit with increased sanitization and social distancing. But that won’t stop your kids from enjoying the new outdoor Liichokoshkomo’ (pronounced Lee-cho-kosh-ko-mo) exhibit, a Chickasaw phrase meaning “Let’s play!” According to the museum, the interactive exhibit’s “outdoor setting encourages play while connecting visitors with the social and historical influences that shaped the West (Plus, it’s just fun!)” It’s hard to sell it better than that, so we’ll stop there.
Three popular current exhibitions have also been extended until July 5: Warhol and the West, which explores Andy Warhol’s love of the West represented in his art, movies, attire, travel and collecting; Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing, which examines a broad range of the artist's work through the lens of social and political activism; and Find Your Western, a collection of pop art and memorabilia that encourages visitors to explore the Western genre and its influence on pop culture in the United States as well as other countries. In addition, the Colors of Clay exhibition, which explores the cultural and regional diversity of Native American ceramic traditions in North America, will now be available to check out until June 21.
Beyond that, mark your calendars for later on in the summer, as the famed Prix de West exhibit opens Aug. 1 and will run through Sept. 13, with the sale held the weekend of Sept. 11-12. The Prix de West is one of The Cowboy’s premiere exhibitions and sales and is eagerly anticipated every year. According to the website, “The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum hosts a prestigious invitational art exhibition of more than 300 Western paintings and sculpture by the finest contemporary Western artists in the nation with art seminars, receptions, and awards.” The art in the exhibition is representative of a variety of styles and media and is a great chance to see some of the best Western art in the world, so don’t miss it!
