Nonprofit art house Rodeo Cinema cuts ribbon on historic renovated film venue

Fancy an independent film or something that makes you think more than the standard Hollywood fare? Ready for foreign docs, guest speakers and other special film events? You're in luck. Friday, September 28 is the ribbon-cutting and grand opening of Rodeo Cinema, a new nonprofit art house cinema located in the historic Centennial Rodeo Opry Theater at 2221 Exchange Avenue in Stockyards City.

“It’s been a thrill to see this historic movie theatre come back to life,” said Rodeo Cinema Executive Director Kim Haywood. “And looking at the films and events we have planned, Rodeo Cinema is sure to become a beacon for community and culture in Oklahoma City.”

Now screening films seven days per week, the mission of Rodeo Cinema "is to promote, engage, and enrich community consciousness through film." Unique in its nonprofit setup, money patrons spend on seeing films goes back into the cinema's mission and enables more dollars to go toward securing additional film screenings and other programs.

“The timing was right to open a unique arthouse theater in Oklahoma City, and with its remarkable history, Stockyards City is the perfect home for Rodeo Cinema,” said Clark Wiens, Rodeo Cinema and Circle Cinema co-founder.

Rodeo Cinema will host grand opening events September 28-30:

  • 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 28: Ribbon cutting
  • 10:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29: True Romance 25th anniversary screening presented by VHS and Chill
  • 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 30: Screening of BLAZE featuring a post-screening discussion with Blaze Foley’s brother, Doug Fuller

While a full film screening schedule is already on the books, Rodeo plans to open two more screens in 2019.

Hope to see you at the ribbon-cutting, and congrats to Rodeo Cinema!
